Total Diva Pets was created by sisters Jenny and Crissy Slaughter, who have always loved animals. They were raised in a special seaside town in California where dogs have always ruled and many people in the town can't remember not being able to bring their dog to a restaurant, store, post office, beach or anywhere else their biped companions traveled."Growing up, our animals were part of our family. For as long as I can remember, Crissy and I were bringing home strays and convincing our parents to let us adopt them. We had no idea back then that our love of pets would inspire us to start a business that would take us around the world!"
Both Jenny and Crissy made the move to Santa Barbara for college to study Marine Biology, and it was at this time they started to take pet costume design seriously. During college at UC Santa Barbara, Jenny and Crissy began entering their pets in Santa Barbara's annual Big Dog parade, the largest canine festival in the United States where people compete for the top prize awarded to the most creative dog costumes.
Jenny's dog, a Shiba Inu named Yogi, was the ultimate inspiration for their creative dog costume designs. "He was the best model," she said. "Yogi participated in the Big Dog Parade for 13 years and has played the part of Hugh Hefner, a pirate, little red riding hood, a dog playing poker, and Robin Hood to name a few. People were always complimenting us on our creative homemade costumes."
In 2007, the dog parade frenzy was captured on film. "Unleashed-A Dogumentary" features the sisters as the team to beat and follows them preparing for the parade and launching their business, Total Diva Pets. Their entry for the parade "The Dogs Next Door" was inspired by the hit E! Channel series about life in the Playboy mansion, and proved to be a crowd favorite.
"For that year's parade, we really needed little blonde wigs for the dogs to play Hugh Hefner's blonde bombshell girlfriends. We couldn't find any dog wigs so we tried to use human wigs, but they didn't fit and wouldn't stay on," Crissy explained. "We came up with our own creative design for dog wigs that turned out so cute, people wanted to buy them."
This motivated the sisters to start Total Diva Pets and start selling their creative doggie designs. "We realized that creating wigs made for pets was an unusual concept, but soon discovered a market for our wigs." said Jenny. Their dog wigs designs have been featured in the Pet Fashion Week Runway Shows in New York and Tokyo. The eight wig designs feature comfortably lined ear holes and an adjustable elastic strap. The wigs are available in five sizes, from Chihuahua wigs to Great Dane wigs-even wigs for cats! "The publicity and our opportunities have been incredible."
"Unleashed-A Dogumentary", the film featuring Total Diva Pets is now shown worldwide on the Discoverey Channel and will be featured domestically on the Smithsonian Channel.
Total Diva Pets is based in Santa Barbara, where the sisters work on new designs. Jenny and Crissy travel the country and the world representing their business at pet industry trade shows and work on creating new concepts. Their home and office is shared with many pets and friends, often the inspirations for the latest dog-wig creations. Their wigs are now sold in over seven countries and more than 80 stores worldwide.
